Help Promote Literacy in the Kent County, RI Community!
You can make a difference in people’s lives by giving the gift of literacy. Volunteer your time, and you’ll have the fulfillment of knowing that you are not only aiding individuals, but also building stronger, more successful communities.
You Can Become a Volunteer Literacy Tutor
LVKC trains volunteer tutors to work with adult Basic Literacy students or English Language Learners. Tutors in Literacy Volunteers of Kent County literacy program receive intensive instruction through a series of workshops that prepare them to teach one-to-one or in small groups. After completing a minimum 8 hours in a Tutor Training Workshop, our tutors are matched with adult students. They are expected to work together for a minimum of 2 hours per week. The tutor and the students decide where and when to meet. Lessons are typically conducted in libraries, churches, or community centers. Our tutors receive ongoing support and guidance as needed. You must be 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED to become a volunteer tutor.
Donate Your Time: Non-Tutor Capacity
There are always opportunities to become involved with Literacy Volunteers of Kent County! Volunteer your time as a tutor, small group leader or assessor, assist with our fundraising efforts, add to our public awareness activities or serve on our Board. All of these LVKC components are ongoing and we are always in need of a few good ideas to keep our organization energized and forward moving.
