    Library Resources for Tutors and Students of LVKC
    The following is a list and brief summary of the computer programs available for use for the literacy program at the Coventry Library:

    Boggle- a computer version of the popular word board game

    Brighter Path's Interactive English- helps the student to develop listening skills, comprehension, and pronunciation, and to learn letters and numbers; ideal for ESL

    Compass Community Exploration- for ESL beginner and intermediate students -or- basic reading students

    Dilemma in the Workplace- designed for adolescents and adults with reading levels 4-8.5; helps the student develop reading comprehension and vocabulary by using critical thinking and decision making processes.

    GED for the 21st Century- good for all students; enables students to practice the GED test; student must contact the literacy coordinator who will log the student into the GED program. Once entered into the GED computer program database, the student can use this computer test at any time during library and lab hours.

    Let's Talk English- concentrates on teaching vocabulary and pronunciation; instructions and user's manual are available in 8 languages; contact the literacy coordinator to request the installation of a specific language; please give 3-4 days notice.

    Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing- the student train to type by using this program; it stresses keyboard positioning, which helps to improve accuracy and typing rhythm; program keeps track of the student's progress.

    The New Oxford Picture Dictionary- multimedia version in English only; for beginner to intermediate ESL students

    Reading in the Workplace- Food Services- improves reading comprehension and vocabulary by using job-based, real life food service situations

    Reading S.O.S.- Strategies for Older Students- designed to help older basic reading -or- ESL students acquire and improve basic reading skills; best suited for intermediate students

    Smart Start English- helps students develop the recognition and pronunciation of 50 common English words.

    Ultimate Phonics Reading Program- teaches phonics sounds and rules; for beginner ESL -or- basic reading students

    The 2 most popular programs being used right now by our students and tutors are Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing and Ultimate Phonics reading Program.

    Also available on the library shelves for check out are citizenship preparation books and CD's, such as:

    Computer Lab Hours for Tutor and Students of LVKC:


    Three computers are available for student and tutor use in the LVKC Training Room in the Coventry Health and Human Services Building on MacArthur Boulevard. Please call 822 - 9103 to make an appointment.

    Computers are also available for patron use at the Coventry Library.
