Summer Reading 2010
Make A Splash At Your Library

Grades 1-5 (Independent Readers)

Ahoy readers! Independent readers entering Grades 1 through 5 in September are invited to "Sail" into the 2010 summer reading program! Readers will be challenged to read at least 6 library books during the program. Prizes and incentive coupons will be awarded. Craft Programs and special performances will highlight the program.

Register beginning Monday, June 21st at the library or right here. Follow the instructions for registering and printing out the information sheets. Book crediting will begin July 6th and continue through August 14th. A full schedule of summer events will be available at registration.

The Mysterious Seashore

Wednesday, August 4th at 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm

A 60 minute hands-on exploration of living things in our nearby ocean will feature educational experiments and crafts. Play Seashore BINGO! Grades 2 through 5. Registration required. Space is limited.Please call 822-9102.

 

Watercolor Painting with Mrs. Quinn

Tuesday, July 27th at 6:00pm

Fun with watercolor paints!  Experiment with watercolors in this 1-hour introductory class.  Ages 5-12.  Registration required.  Limit: 12 artists.

Thawn Sherente Harris
Thursday, July 29th at 2:00 pm

Storyteller Thawn Harris shares his Narragansett culture through traditional song, dance and legends. Thawn Harris lives together with his wife and their four children adjacent to their tribal lands where they pass on the values and cultural life ways of their people. Thawn has shared his culture with the greater community for the past decade while working to complete his degree at the University of Rhode Island. Following in the traditions of his ancestors, Thawn plays the cedar flute and hand-drum, is a social dancer and singer, as well as a former world champion of the Eastern War Dance.

 

Cinderella: The Western

The classic fairy tale that we all love and know about a girl who 0vercomes trial, error, dirty laundry and irritating relatives to win the love of the Sherriff's son.

Frankenstein Has A Toothache

Did you ever wonder why poor Frankenstein moaned so much? Why he was so misunderstood? This brief, new (and short) musical answers the unanswered and explains the unexplained in the most amusing light.

Flying Vegetables are a collection of young adult/teen performers who enjoy theatre and have performed throughout the State of RI. The performance is family friendly. Thursday, August 12th at 6:00pm. No Registration.

 

Saturday Storytime

Saturday Family Storytimes

For children ages 3 through 8. Children ages 3 through 8 are invited to drop-in storytimes on Saturdays. July 17th, 24th, 31st and August 7th all at 10:30am.  These 45 minute thematic story programs will feature stories, activities and crafts.  No registration.

Evening Storytimes ( ages 3- 8 )

Children are invited to come to the library in pajamas and slippers to enjoy cozy storytimes featuring stories, music, fingerplays and crafts. No registration.
Wednesdays at 6:30pm. July 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th August 4th, 11th

Drop-in Crafts to Make & Take

Children of all ages (younger children with adult supervision, please) may drop by the youth services department on Thursday afternoons from 3:00 - 5:00 pm to create a take - home craft. A variety of materials will be available on the craft table for crafting fun.

Drop in Games

Visit the youth services department on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00 - 5:00 pm to play board games with other library friends. Select a game from the list, ask a librarian for the game you'd like to play, and have fun!

Please Note: Program cancellation policy change-

There will be no daytime children's story programs whenever Coventry Public schools are not in session due to holidays, school vacations, scheduled closings (i.e. professional developement, parent -teacher conferences) and weather-related cancellations, delayed openings, and early dismissals.

Collectors wanted!

The Children's Display Case is in need of new collections. If you have a collection you would like to display for 1 or 2 weeks, please call the Children's Department ( 822 - 9102 ) or speak to a Children's Librarian. Collections can include toys, handmade items, natural objects, special collectables. We love to see what our young library patrons are interested in collecting!
